‘Battle of Crusaders’ at Kalutara tomorrow
The second ‘Battle Of Crusaders’ encounter between the batch of ’92 Group of Holy Cross College, Kalutara and the first XI cricket team of the school will be worked off tomorrow Sunday, 22 at the College Grounds. The limited over encounter was introduced last year and is played for the Rev. Bro. Francis Silva Memorial Trophy, donated by the Executive Committee of the ‘92 Group in memory of the first Marist Brother Director of the school.
Holy Cross College started cricket in 1901 and the school was managed by Catholic priests until 1978, whereupon Marist Brothers took over the administration with that great scholar, the late Rev. Brother Francis Silva as the first Director, who did a yeomen service to develop the school and its sports.
A colourful opening ceremony will begin the proceedings of the day with Lasantha Mudalige, the President of Colombo Branch of the old boys union of Holy Cross College as the chief guest at 9.15 am.
The ‘92 Group is considered one of the best batches of old boys in the college and has produced great scholars apart from brilliant cricketers and sportsmen.
Jayantha Silva, a member of the ’92 Group went onto play Test cricket and now resides in Melbourne, Australia. He is considered as one of the best left arm leg-spinners the country produced.
Silva took more than 130 wickets in the 1992-93 season and in the process broke the then record for most number of wickets in a season.
Kapila Mendis, who subsequently played for the Singapore national team holds the record as the highest run getter in the Singapore Cricket League. He also owns a record in the Asian Cricket Council trophy tournament having hit 191 runs in 123 balls in a game.
Leg-spinner Dishan Fernando was the youngest ever to play First XI cricket for Holy Cross College at the age of 13 and was a member of the national spinners’ pool.
Pradeep Fernando is a former Ruhuna University and Galle Medical Faculty wicketkeeper and captain. He was one of the best fielders in college teams during the 80s.
Ravi Philip, a fine all-rounder who now plays for MAS Holdings, was selected to Sri Lanka A Pool and has scored several centuries during his school days.
Jagath Roshan represented Kelaniya University and still plays state services cricket. A genuine all-rounder, he will share the new ball with the lethal Prasad Gunarathna.
Stylish right-hand batsman, Sanjeewa de Silva, who has several centuries under his belt will be leading the side and open batting.
On the other hand, young Crusaders, Holy Cross College First XI team, recorded four outright wins during the 2008/09 season, including wins over St. Thomas’ Matara, Piliyandala Central, and Siri Piyarathana MV and St. Xavier’s, Marawila.
They were able to dismiss St. Thomas’ College for a mere 17 runs, which may probably be a schools cricket record.
The young Crusaders emerged as runners-up at the Kalutara District six-a-side tournament organized by Kalutara District Umpires Association recently.
Nuwan Maduwantha, a third year coloursman is the captain of the side. He has scored over 750 runs apart from taking 20 wickets. The right-arm paceman opens bowling for the school.
Fourth year coloursman Vinod Lakshitha is a player to watch as he has taken more than 50 wickets with his left arm leg-spin. The opener has also scored over 600 runs.
Janaka Arampath, a fourth year coloursman is a left arm seamer.
Senura Senarathna, a genuine all-rounder, who opens batting has scored oves 400 runs.
